I dedicate this post to all the moms out there. Moms, in whatever form it means to you and the relationships that have extended from them. Coming from someone who spent most of her life adamantly not wanting kids, this post comes from a very special place in my heart where the biggest life change I ever made, turned out to be the best by far. I come from a small immediate family but a huge extended family where I consider myself very lucky to celebrate this day in my heart with my mom, Godmom, Godmom to my children, the network of friends who help me raise my “villagers”, grandmoms to my babies, and the many moms I’ve been blessed enough to capture behind the lens. Looking back on some of the motherhood moments I’ve caught this past year cemented the fact that capturing moments between people is an amazing gift that I am grateful to have been given. Thank you moms everywhere for all that you do and warm thoughts to all who are holding on to memories of their moms who have gone. A few mommy moments this past year that will forever leave an imprint in my heart. Happy Mother’s Day!

Selfies in the Desert

If you’ve ever been to the desert in the gorgeous light of the evening sunset, you know of its magic. If not, like me, this is a new experience and you’d pull your car over and set up the tripod , attempt to set focus and run to where you think the magic will happen in a 1/320 of a second to catch a few images of you and your daughter. Focusing on a random bush is not easy. Running to said bush to try to be in the image and somewhat in focus when there is no one or nothing to set focus on is even more difficult. Here are some I am proud of. To be in pictures with my daughter is priceless. To be a passerby, such an experience must have been hysterical. Happy early Mother’s Day!

Beauty

Once in a while you meet people who are so physically beautiful to the eye that it’s impossible not to stare. Sometimes you meet people who are so beautiful on the inside, they make you want to be a better person just being in their presence. On rare instances, you meet a person who is just as beautiful on the inside as they are on the outside. Enter such a person. It is here that my ramblings will end and the beauty will begin.

Operation Scout

Location hunting with my daughter is always a supercharged, high energy expedition in which I have all but about 3 minutes to scout the spot, find the light, and try to snap some keepers before she either eats an inedible plant, smears dirt on her face, or runs to my legs in agony of having been separated from me by 22 feet. Wow that was a long sentence. Just a few of my little pistol in which has recently become my favorite spot to shoot. Sun, glorious sun!

To say that the coming of this new baby was long awaited would be an understatement. Adding the final piece to this family puzzle has everyone in a tizzy of excitement and anticipation. When editing this session I kept going back to the remake by Izzy. Click here for a mood setter. Since they met and married in Hawaii, it was more than fitting. To be able to capture this stage of this family’s life was an honor. Truthfully, it was a terrible week of weather and it was so overcast during their shoot I thought I might cry. Me, the lover of all things sunshiny and bright. After their session I decided we didn’t need any sunshine with us as they brought more than enough simply with their presence, excitement, and love for one another..

This super gorgeous and energized couple met through mutual friends on a trip to Hawaii. It was kind of like a “blind date vacation” and boy did it ever work out! It seemed only fitting that their engagement photos incorporate the sea and sand that originally brought them together. They live in the central coast and chose Avila Beach for the ocean shots. It was a perfect evening. Warm with a slight breeze and though the beach was crowded, we worked around the people to make them appear as if they were the only ones there. Wishing them a lifetime of love and happiness in all their future endeavors.

Hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed shooting them!

What to Wear-Spring 2012 {Sacramento Family Photographer}

Spring is coming! I’ve had a bunch of inquiries regarding what to wear for upcoming family sessions so I thought I’d put together a little post with some ideas. When deciding what to wear for sessions with multiple people, the ideal goal is to compliment each other with coordinating color palettes. Try to stay away from “matchy matchy” and “all white or all black” as everybody will blend together and will detract from individual personalities. Neon or very bright colors do not photograph well either and surely take away from the subject matter as they can easily overwhelm and draw the eye to the clothing instead of the person or people being photographed. A wonderful link for researching color palettes can be found here. This next link is generally used for wedding planning but has amazing color combination ideas as well. Check out The Perfect Palette for a million ideas. And because there is no way on Earth I could blog a post about clothing choices without pictures, here are a few samples to help you get started. There is nothing more rewarding or heartwarming than photographing the growth of a child. I originally got the opportunity to photograph this little one when she was just a few days old here. Amazing how time flies and how quickly they grow up. Here for her 6th month photos, she truly reminded me of a Kewpie Doll…remember those? Check out those chipmunk cheeks and eyelashes for days. We met in one of my favorite locations for a very quick 20 minute shoot and here are some of my favorites.

Sometimes on a chilly, overcast, winter day when you are walking from the zoo to the car, there are piles of lonely, unsuspecting leaves waiting for you to play in them with your kids. No one cares that they are not dressed to the nines or your son’s foot long hair is not combed. No one cares that the leaves only contain the crunchy, brown remnants of what was once blazing reds yellows, and oranges. What is important is the fact that I had my camera with me to capture memories of me with my sidekicks acting a fool on the ground. It’s also pretty important that I got a picture of me with my super cute new scarf on. Wait…I think I just said I take my kids to the zoo in dirty clothes without brushing their hair. Mother of the year award…2012.
