One of the greatest honors of 2014 was being flown to South Carolina to photograph the gorgeous Rose Hill Mansion wedding of Tyson and Mike. For obvious reasons, we will refer to Tyson first in this union from here on out. You may remember the wedding of Tyson’s sister Chelsea and her husband Mike HERE I shot a few years ago. This family is so special to me and just being in their presence for the weekend made my entire year. Or maybe it was the southern hospitality and plethora of savory crab cakes, oysters, and gorgeous Hilton Head views. Nawww…it was definitely their presence. But the other stuff didn’t hurt either. It was my first time traveling to South Carolina and I have to say that it was absolutely lovely (and humid, and hot, and a little humid and a little hot). I may or may not have needed to invest in chafing cream (TMI) and surely have a new respect for photographers who lug a billion pounds of gear around for 10 hours in the humidity that is so customary of the south. But it was worth it. Absolutely.

Tyson and Mike met in undergrad at George Washington University and have been together for years. They finally decided to take the plunge and leave their beloved pet cat back in DC for their nuptials. Oh but don’t you worry…they brought an 8×10 of “George” to be there with them for the reception. They may or may not have called the Pet Hotel to check up on him a few times. Crazy cat people…gotta love em.

The entire 3 day affair was equal parts classy and fun. A special thanks goes out to my amazing friend and photographer Anita Martin who left her family for 5 days to shoot this wedding with me. And for her patience when our flight home was cancelled and we had to stay another night. Which ended up being a pretty awesome 24 hour jaunt in Savannah taking pedicabs through the historic streets and chasing down haunted houses.

A few details: The classic and historic nature of the Rose Hill Mansion, a beautiful 1850s low country plantation, provided guests with an authentic feel of the south. A destination wedding for the majority of the guests, Tyson and Mike chose this plantation and its natural beauty as the perfect backdrop and experience for their loved ones. Tyson sent fabric swatches of soft golds and tans to her bridesmaids to help them choose their individual bridesmaids dresses. She chose a simple but classic raw silk Paloma Blanca dress with pockets so she could easily dance the night away with her guests. They chose a clear tent for the reception in order to appreciate the natural beauty of the southern live oaks dripping with Spanish moss. At a cocktail making station, customized Makers Mark bottles were accompanied by favorite drink recipes of the bride who is from California and the groom who is from Cincinnati.

I talk too much. Let’s see the pics now thank you very much.

Sometimes I don’t get a chance to meet my couples until the day of the wedding. While you might think that would be awkward, I’ve had nothing but welcoming experiences. This wedding was no exception. Stephanie and Kevin chose the rustic beauty of the Jack London State Park Ruins for their ceremony and reception. The weather was not cooperative the week of their wedding so they had a tent brought into the ruins in case of stormy skies. As is all things Murphy and his dumb laws, it was sunny and glorious the day of their wedding. I can’t get enough of Stephanie’s never ending smile and boisterous laughter and the sweet relationship she had with her mom. Kevin is one of six with four, yes four, brothers and one sister. A well protected sister no doubt. The couple met in the dorms at Santa Clara University and Kevin eventually proposed to Stephanie on the top of Twin Peaks, where Stephanie’s own dad had proposed to her mom more than 40 years ago (remember this fact for pics of Stephanie in her mom’s wedding dress). The day went off without a hitch including a giant guest count, ensuring the most supportive and jovial group of attendees ever. Special thanks to Stacey Dillon of Stacey and Company for turning a hill of ruins into a beautiful party palace and for the most incredible florals by Elissa Veffer, who is an insanely talented freelance floral designer.

I normally don’t post family formals but jeeze…this was just too good looking of a group to pass up. Wow! If I had to describe one tiny word for such a massively beautiful event, it would be “wow”. A Hindu marriage celebration overflows with jubilant laughter, age old traditions, and a supportive family core so strong it could move mountains. From the Baraat to the Kanya Agaman to the Mangal Phera and everythign in between, this wedding blew my socks off. Thank you to Tim Halberg for choosing me to second shoot this epic event with you.
